If a half day isn’t enough, this full-day adventure stitches together the Garden Route’s best wildlife experiences into one carefully paced itinerary. From sunrise with rescued wild cats to a hands-on goodbye with elephants at dusk, you’ll meet primates, exotic birds and Africa’s most charismatic predators, with a long, leisurely lunch at a working vineyard slotted in between. It’s a big day, but it’s not a rushed one. Every stop has time to breathe, and every interaction is built around the welfare of the animals you’ve come to see.

Sunrise with the Cats at Tenikwa
The day starts at 7:30 with a private welcome at the Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre, where a short educational video sets the scene for the conservation work happening behind the scenes. From there your guide leads you through the Meerkat Meander, along the leopard walkway (you’ll need to look carefully — they’re masters of camouflage), and out to meet the cheetahs, caracals and servals. You’ll go inside select enclosures where it’s safe to do so, get genuinely close to the cats, and finish high up on the lion walkway looking down on the centre’s magnificent white lion. The pace is unhurried, and if a favourite catches your eye you’re welcome to circle back for a second look.

An Hour Among the Primates at Monkeyland
Next we cross over to Monkeyland, the world’s largest free-roaming, multi-species primate sanctuary. A ranger leads a one-hour guided safari through the forest on raised walkways, pointing out lemurs, capuchins, gibbons, vervets and squirrel monkeys as they swing, leap and forage in the canopy around you. There are no fences between you and them, just the trees and a quiet sense of being in their world rather than the other way round.

A Long Lunch Under the Vines at Bramon
By midday, you’ll have earned your appetite. Lunch is served at Bramon Wine Estate, a vineyard tucked into The Crags, where the menu leans Mediterranean: mezze platters, cheeses, pâtés, tapas and warm homemade bread. A glass of Bramon’s own wine is included, and you’ll eat outdoors among the vines with plenty of time to slow down before the afternoon’s two big stops.

Free Flight at Birds of Eden
After lunch we head into Birds of Eden, the world’s largest free-flight aviary, a vast mesh dome stretched over indigenous forest, waterfalls and elevated boardwalks. Hundreds of previously caged birds from every corner of the globe now live here in free flight — turacos, parrots, ibises and dozens more — and the half-hour or so you’ll spend walking through the canopy is one of those genuinely peaceful, only-in-Plett moments.

Trunk in Hand at The Crags Elephant Sanctuary
The day ends at The Crags Elephant Sanctuary for the closest, most personal animal encounter of the tour. You’ll touch and feed the elephants, walk trunk-in-hand alongside them, and take part in the brush-down programme as they’re bedded down for the night. It’s a quiet, affectionate way to close out a day full of wildlife, and most guests say it’s the moment they remember longest. We have you back at your accommodation by around 18:00.

How long is the day, and is the pace manageable?
It’s a full day, running from 7:30 in the morning until roughly 18:00. Each of the five stops is comfortably paced, and the time between them is short enough that you’re never sitting in the vehicle for long. You’ll be on your feet a fair bit, but on flat, easy walkways and boardwalks, not strenuous trails.
What should I wear and bring along?
Comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes are recommended, since you’ll be walking through forest at Tenikwa, Monkeyland and Birds of Eden. Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, a camera and some cash or card for lunch and any souvenirs along the way.
Is lunch included in the price?
The tour rate covers all entrance fees and a glass of wine at Bramon, but the meal itself is for your own account. Bramon’s mezze and tapas menu is well priced for the setting, and the vineyard atmosphere is part of why we stop there.
Is this tour suitable for children?
Yes, absolutely, and most families love it. The variety of animals keeps younger children engaged across the full day, and the walks are short and flat. The elephant interaction at the end is particularly memorable for kids. Do bear in mind that it is a long day, so very young children may tire toward the late afternoon.
Can I touch the animals, and is the tour ethical?
The wild cats at Tenikwa are observed only, not touched, which is in keeping with their conservation work. At The Crags Elephant Sanctuary, touching, feeding and walking with the elephants is part of the structured programme. Monkeyland and Birds of Eden are hands-off sanctuaries where you simply walk among the animals on raised paths. Every venue on this tour is a recognised sanctuary or conservation centre.
