Where the Garden
Route
Meets the Karoo
Cross the Outeniqua Mountains from George into the Klein Karoo, a landscape unlike anywhere else on the Garden Route. The vegetation thins, the air dries, and you arrive in a world of vast plains, ancient rock, and golden light that made Oudtshoorn the capital of the world’s ostrich feather boom over a century ago.
Your day combines three of South Africa’s most extraordinary experiences: the Cango Caves, a series of dripstone caverns sculpted over millennia into vast cathedral-like halls; a working ostrich farm where you can stand on an egg and meet these fascinating ancient birds; and a close-encounter visit to Cango Wildlife Ranch, a breeding facility for endangered species where you can touch a cheetah, hold a tiger cub, or wrap yourself in a python. Your private guide brings the local history, geology, and stories vividly to life along the way.

The Journey:
Every stop is a chapter in the story of the Klein Karoo. Your private guide sets the pace, you stop and go as you wish.
1
Hotel Pickup &
Outeniqua Pass
Your private guide collects you from your hotel or guest house anywhere in the Garden Route. The journey begins immediately with a scenic drive over the Outeniqua Mountains, the dramatic boundary between the lush coastal world and the vast semi-arid interior. Photo stops along the way.
2
Cango Caves
Explore one of the world’s great natural wonders, a series of dripstone caverns sculpted by nature through the ages, opening into vast halls of towering stalactite and stalagmite formations. Your guide will help you choose between the standard Heritage Tour, a fully accessible walk through the main chambers, or the Adventure Tour for the brave, squeezing through narrow passages deep underground.
3
Ostrich Farm
Visit a working ostrich farm for an interactive tour. Learn about these fascinating ancient birds, see eggs in various stages of development, and try standing on one. Oudtshoorn’s ostrich industry dates back over 150 years and your guide brings that history vividly to life.
4
A Taste of Karoo
Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant (own account). Sample the famous Karoo cuisine: ostrich steak, bobotie, or something from the Klein Karoo wine route. Oudtshoorn’s restaurant scene is genuinely excellent and a highlight of the region.
5
Cango Wildlife Ranch
Spend the afternoon at the Cango Wildlife Ranch, a respected breeding facility for endangered species. The standard tour brings you face to face with big cats, crocodiles and other rare animals, while optional close encounters let you touch a cheetah, meet a tiger cub or even wrap yourself in a python. A genuine wildlife highlight.
6
Scenic Return Journey
The return journey winds back over the Outeniqua Mountains as the late afternoon light catches the peaks and valleys. Your guide is happy to stop for photographs or a final coffee along the way before dropping you safely back at your hotel or guest house. A full day, beautifully done.

What Guests Say
Frequently Asked
Can I actually ride an ostrich on the farm visit?
Ostrich riding is offered on some farms as a paid extra and is not included in the tour price. Your guide will let you know what’s available on the day. What is included is the full farm experience, where you can feed ostriches and, famously, stand on an ostrich egg.
What is the difference between the standard Cango Wildlife Ranch tour and the close encounter?
The standard tour takes you through the ranch to observe the animals, including cheetahs, tigers, and pythons, from a safe viewing distance. The close encounter allows you to enter certain enclosures to touch a cheetah, hold a tiger cub, or wrap yourself in a python. The current Oudtshoorn tour rate includes both the standard tour and the close encounter.
How long does the Cango Caves tour take, and is it suitable for people with claustrophobia?
The standard Cango Caves Heritage Tour takes approximately one hour and is conducted through large, open caverns. There is also an Adventure Tour that involves tight crawl spaces and is not recommended for those with claustrophobia. Your guide will help you choose the right option. The standard Heritage Tour is included in your tour price.
Where will I have lunch, and roughly what will it cost?
Lunch is at your own account at a local Oudtshoorn restaurant. Jemima’s Restaurant is a popular choice in the area, known for traditional Karoo cuisine. Budget approximately R150 to R250 per person for a main meal and a drink, though this varies depending on your choice.
How long is the drive from the Garden Route over the Outeniqua Mountains to Oudtshoorn?
The scenic drive from the Garden Route coast over the Outeniqua Mountains to Oudtshoorn takes roughly 45 minutes to one hour depending on your pickup location. It forms a beautiful part of the day and your guide will point out notable landmarks along the way.
